Advertising and Product Review Policies
Here’s our deal on advertising, requests for product reviews, and links back to your site.
We put something in our “Love Objects” tab only if we truly love it. We are 100% transparent about how we found out about it. For example, we’ll say something like “MyGreatProduct found out about us in More Magazine and asked us to check out their stuff. They sent us a free sample, which we dutifully tried, and here’s what we think about it….” Sometimes we write a longer essay on a suite of products: not all products mentioned will be favorably reviewed. However, we avoid out-and-out product pans; we simply do not write about stuff we don’t like.
The only way we consider ads is if we’re 100% transparent about it, which means it could look something like, “On our site, you’ll find an ad from so-and-so. They reached out to us, we tried their thing, and we think it’s okay. Not great, but okay. Maybe you’ll like it better.” Or: ”On our site, you’ll find an ad from so-and-so. They sent us this free thing, and we think it’s terrific.” Maybe one day we’d even run an ad that looks like, “On our site, you’ll find an ad from so-and-so. We haven’t tried this product, but it looks harmless and could be cool, so we decided to accept their advertising moola. Over to you.” In other words, we need to be completely candid about how the product came to our attention, what we think about it, whether or not we’ve actually tried it.
